(Would) Prefer

Ayrıca "would prefer" ifadesi belirli bir durumda neyin tercih edildiğini ifade etmek için kullanılır.Tercih ifade edilirken “prefer” ifadesi üç farklı şekilde kullanılabilir:

1. Prefer something to something else

2. prefer to do something rather than do something else

3. prefer doing something to doing something else

Bu farklı üç kullanım arasında anlam olarak bir fark yoktur.



I prefer football to basketball.[i1]

I prefer city to country[i2] .

I prefer jogging to running[i3] .



I prefer to drink tea[i4] .

I prefer to drink tea rather than drink coffee[i5] .

I prefer drinking tea[i6]

I prefer drinking tea to drinking coffee[i7] .

Would you prefer coffee or tea? [i8]

I'd prefer to stay at home rather than go to the cinema tonight.[i9]

I would prefer to stay at home rather than go out[i10] .

I prefer chicken rather than beef.[i11]




WOULD RATHER kendisinden sonra doğrudan isim almaz. Prefer alabilir.

He would rather have a house in the town.

I’d prefer a house in the town.






Birinin bir şey yapmasını istediğimizde ise:

I'd prefer you not to smoke [i12]

She said she'd prefer us to arrive no later than nine o'clock[i13]

Fakat

I'd rather you didn’t smoke[i14]

She said she'd rather we arrived no later than nine o'clock[i15]




Geçmişte yapılan bir şeyin şu an konuşulurken ise:

I would prefer to have stayed at home (rather) than have gone out last night[i16] .

Fakat

I would rather have stayed at home than (have) gone out last night[i17]
