Should, Ought to (-meli, -malı)



Her ikisi de “tavsiye ve öneri” anlamında kullanılır. Bütün şahıslarla kullanılırlar. “Should”un olumsuz ve soru biçimi vardır. “Ought to” olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde kullanılmaz.

v Ali should do his homework.[A3]

v The light is yellow. We ought to slow down.[A4]

v We shouldn’t go out. It is raining. [A5]

Had Better (…-sa iyi olur)



“Had better” yapısını tavsiye edildiğinde ve öneride bulunulduğunda kullanılır. Anlam yönüyle “should”a çok benzer ve aynı manayı verecek şekilde kullanılabilir. “Had better”in olumsuz şekli “had better not” şeklinde kullanılır. “Had better” normal olarak olumlu soru yapısıyla kullanılmaz, fakat öğüt anlamında olumsuz soruda bulunur. “Had better”dan sonra fiilin yalın hali kullanılır.



v We’d better stop for lunch. I’m very hungry[A7] .

v You’d better wear a coat. It’s cold outside[A8] .



v I have to meet the Colonel in five minutes.I’d better go now or I’ll be late. [A9]

v It’s a very nice tie. You had better not change it.[A10]

Shouldn’t –needn’t



Shouldn’t birisine tavsiye verirken kullanırız. Needn’t ise gereklilik olmadığını belirtir.



v You shouldn’t call him tonight. He is very angry[A14] .

v You needn’t call him tonight. I have already told him about the problem[A15] .



v They shouldn’t work very hard. They can have some health problems.[A16]

v They needn’t work very hard. We will finish the project on time with minimum effort[A17] .



Should—must



Should bir tavsiye verilirken kullanılır fakat must bir zorunluluk ya da yasaklama gibi daha güçlü bir ifadedir.



v You shouldn’t smoke. It is dangerous for your health.[A18]

v You mustn’t smoke. You know what the doctor told about your lungs.[A19]



v They should study harder for becoming successful at school[A20] .

v They must study harder, or else they will flunk the course.[A21]







Should be doing, ought to be doing



Devam eden zamanda bir tavsiye verilirken kullanılır.



v Why are they watching Tv? They should / ought to be sleeping now.[A22]

v He is studying English, but tomorrow there is math exam. He shouldn’t be studying English. He should be studying Math[A23] .
